Lucknow, Jan 12 : After three months of chasing, wildlife officials in Uttar Pradesh have finally succeeded in overpowering a stray rhinoceros that had killed three people in the state.
The animal was captured Tuesday by an expert team led by Lucknow Zoo's deputy director Utkarsh Shukla.
The rhinoceros was immobilised with a tranquilliser gun in the sugarcane fields of a village in Gajraula near Moradabad, about 120 km from New Delhi.
Uttar Pradesh chief wildlife conservator Mohammad Ehsan told IANS: "The animal had covered a long distance, between Bahraich, Lakhimpur-Kheri and Rampur (districts), while using sugarcane fields as cover."
An earlier attempt in October to capture the rhinoceros had failed when it broke out of a cage despite being tranquillised.
Ehsan said: "Since a repeat dose of the tranquilliser drug could not be injected in less than three months, we had to wait.
"It was not an easy task and our team had to spend hours before we could get the animal to rest. We are keeping it in the Lucknow zoo."
