SILIGURI, Feb.
12. — In one of the biggest wildlife haul in
the region, police recovered whole skins of 20 leopards and 19 civet
cats, reportedly worth Rs 50 lakh. Three persons have also been arrested.
The haul was made from an
ambassador car which was intercepted by the police near the Medical
More last night as it was travelling
out of the town. Mr Rajeev Mishra, Additional SP, Siliguri, said
the arrested persons, which includes a woman, were present in the
car. They are Praladh, Tapan Sarkar and his wife Archana Sarkar.
The
police had been tipped off about the consignment being enroute
to Nepal.
The incident has again reaffirmed Siliguri’s noto-riety
at the global scale in being one of the marked places in global
trafficking
of wildlife and their body parts. Much of the trafficking from Siliguri
is, however, confined to ivory and rhino horns.
Investigations are
on to locate the place from where the skins had originated.
