For most people, running 150 miles through the Sahara would be
bad enough, but one Battersea man plans to do the epic race dressed
as a rhino.
Rick Jenner, 25 will be jetting off to Morocco next month for the
Marathon des Sables with a team of seven other intrepid runners
to raise money for Save the Rhino.
The race, equivalent to more than five-and-a-half marathons, is
run over the sand, rocks and dunes of the Sahara and competitors
have to carry everything they need for the week, including clothes,
food, a sleeping bag and, in the case of Rick, an 8kg rhino suit.
Rick is no stranger to running long distances as he ran the New
York City Marathon in 2001 to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research.
However, he was inspired to don the rhino suit after watching a
documentary about the Marathon des Sables featuring the Save the
Rhino team while running in the gym one morning.
With midday temperatures of over 120-deg C, it's not for the faint
hearted, but Rick hopes to raise £12,000 for the charity.
Rick said: "I have been to Africa before and have seen what
amazing creatures rhinos are, and I couldn't think of a better way
to raise awareness and raise funds for this charity. I have been
doing lots of training such as running and swimming to prepare.
My girfriend will be flying to Morocco to meet me at the finishing
line."
