Thursday, April 22, 2004
"Save the Rhino Day" has been set for May 1 at Audubon Zoo, 6500 Magazine St. In honor of the observance, intended to attract attention to the endangered status of the rhinoceros, Audubon Zoo is offering two-for-the-price-of-one admission coupons good from Monday through May 7. The coupons are available only at the zoo's Web site, www.auduboninstitute.org.
A featured attraction will be Satchmo, the first rhino born at the Audubon Zoo. Satchmo and his family are southern white rhinos, a species declining in its native Africa because of poaching, human encroachment and habitat destruction. Only 12,000 or so remain in the wild, with about 160 in captivity.
