PRETORIA -- The fate of a tame rhinoceros whose career as a television
and film star was brought to an end by heart disease will be decided
in a South African court.
Animal welfare organization San Wild Wildlife Trust would like
to see "Baixinha" sold to live out her remaining days
in South Africa's Limpopo Province, the **** Citizen **** newspaper
reported Wednesday.
The South African Ministry of Environmental Affairs and Tourism
would rather enroll the rhino in a controversial "canned hunting"
program whereby tame animals are placed in worry-free hunting reserves
for rich customers.
San Wild has according to DPA gathered 36,000 signatures from Baixinha's
fans against the government plan, the organization said.
