JAKARTA - A Javanese rhinoceros, a rare protected species of which
only about 50-60 are thought to exist, was found dead at Ujung Kulon
National Park in Indonesia's West Java Province, the state-run Antara
news agency reported Saturday.
The rhinoceros was found dead Tuesday by a team of officials from
the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the park, the report said.
Evidence indicated the rhino died from natural causes, Widodo Ramono,
director for regional conservation at the Ministry of Forestry and
Plantation, was quoted as saying in the report.
He said that the rhino likely died of old age, and that there was
nothing to indicate it was killed by a hunter.
