Rhino : In the News
: Articles : Tsunami
Statement |
| |
The staff
of SOS Rhino are very saddened by the devastating effect the tsunami
had on those living in and visiting areas of South-East Asia. The
loss of human life and entire coastal towns and villages is tragic.
Sabah, its people, wildlife areas, and wildlife were not affected
as Sabah is situated in northern Borneo. SOS Rhino's staff, base
camps, partners and colleagues are safe.
It is unfortunate that parts of the northwest side of Peninsula Malaysia were
affected. Hundreds of people were killed and injured in this tragedy. The Malaysian
Government had responded immediately by monitoring and evacuating any potential
risk areas such as coastal villages and residents in Penang, Langkawi, and Kedah.
As of this date, we have no formal reports on assessment of damage to any wildlife
areas in Malaysia or Indonesia, where Sumtran rhinos are likely to be found.
SOS Rhino will continue to monitor the situation in South-East Asia and post
any updates.
